Lagoon Restoration

The volunteer effort at the Lagoon and playground area has been outstanding so far this year. Our volunteers have been hard at work planting, weeding, picking up trash and moving a lot of rocks. In fact they have planted over 500 plants at the lagoon boardwalk area along with 4 flats of ivy at the playground, and have filled numerous lawn bags with unwanted weeds. The areas are looking very good and will continue to improve with some more fall plantings. In addition to our regular group of volunteers we have had two special groups join us. In June we had volunteers from the Illinois EPA internship program come out for the day to place several tons of rip rap to aid in erosion control at problem areas around the lagoon. In July a group of volunteers from the Target store internship program spent a couple of hours at the Playground weeding, cleaning and spreading mulch. The Park District has also been hard at work at the lagoon. A new pathway was laid down between the two bodies of water, and is a big improvement. They have also installed a curb at the parking area to alleviate an erosion problem under the boardwalk.

We will continue to hold a work day at least once a month until weather prohibits. Please continue to support this wonderful program for without our volunteers our parks could not continue to be the beautiful places that we love to visit.
