Generations Tree Program

The weather in the past year has not been kind to our trees.   The Springfield Park District arborist Chuck Smith reports that over 400 trees have bee damaged or completely lost in the past year throughout our parks.  Much clean-up is still being done and our parks are always in need of new trees.  Caring for and replacing trees is essential to maintaining the quality of the over 40 neighborhood, community and regional parks for future generations.

The Generations Tree Program is a cooperative effort of the Springfield Parks Foundation and the Springfield Park District.   This program provides an opportunity for all citizens to donate either a whole tree or provide a partial gift to be combined with others to purchase trees.

When you donate a tree in the Generations Tree Program, the Springfield Park District Arborist, Chuck Smith, will carefully choose a native tree such as an oak or maple or flowering varieties such as dogwood or redud, and determine the best location to plant it.  Smith makes every effort to plant in the donor’s specified park or meet special requests.

“The trees we plant in the parks are already grown to a trunk diameter of 1 ½”, says Smith.  According to Smith the larger size tree has a much higher probability of survival and is less likely to fall prey to vandalism, as smaller plantings may be.

Plantings are generally done twice a year in the spring and the fall.   If you donate a tree, your tree will be purchased and planted during the next scheduled planting.  The Springfield Parks Foundation will notify you of the planting and send you a certificate of commemoration.

Businesses or organizations may also donate trees individually or in groves.  Royal Oaks Nissan has donated two groves of trees planted in Centennial Park.  New parks need trees and the Springfield Park District’s newest development, Southwind Park, especially is in need of donors for entire groves of trees.  A grove (12 – 20 trees depending on type and size) donation is available for approximately $5000.  If your business is interested in donating one or more trees, please contact Diane Williams at 899-0592 to assist you with your donation.

Trees may be donated as:

  1. an honor to mark an achievement or event
  2. a tribute to loved ones
  3. to celebrate the birth of a baby
  4. in memory of a loved one
  5. a distinctive recognition to a family or an individual
  6. birthdays, anniversaries, or any special occasion

Your donation of just $175 will bring a new tree to the park for many future generations to enjoy!  Download our Generations Tree Program brochure (provide link here), pick up a brochure at any Springfield Park District office or call 753-6212 to have a brochure sent to you.
